The popularity of the federal government is declining - this is also reflected in the satisfaction with some ministers such as Robert Habeck.

But the Union cannot use it.

Berlin - Satisfaction with the traffic light coalition has declined significantly since the beginning of the Ukraine war.

In March, 75 percent were still of the opinion that the government was doing a good job, but now only 49 percent say so, according to the ZDF "political barometer" published on Friday.

44 percent gave the SPD, Greens and FDP a bad report, including majorities in the supporters of the opposition parties.

ZDF political barometer: SPD, Greens and Union lose

According to the survey, the CDU/CSU cannot benefit from dissatisfaction with the federal government.

If there were a federal election next Sunday, not only would the SPD and the Greens lose compared to the previous poll, but also the CDU/CSU.

The SPD would have 18 percent (minus one), the CDU/CSU 27 percent (minus one) and the Greens 22 percent (minus one).

The FDP could gain with now 7 percent (plus one) and also the AfD with 14 percent (plus one).

The left would stay at five percent, the other parties reach seven percent.

The traffic light coalition would only have a wafer-thin majority.

The only two-party alliance that is currently an option would be black-green - a model that exists in Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia.

ZDF political barometer: Habeck is no longer the most popular politician

In the assessment of the ten most important politicians according to sympathy and performance, most of them have lost their reputation, with Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) again being particularly noticeable.

The Vice Chancellor was long considered the most popular politician in the Federal Republic.

- but then made a few blunders, for example with the gas levy he was planning.

The 53-year-old offered another target for attack with the decision to take the nuclear power plants that are still in operation off the grid despite the energy crisis at the end of the year, and to only let two of them run on reserve.

The former head of the Greens has now slipped from first to fourth place in ZDF's top ten list.

Note on the survey

The Wahlen research group surveyed 1,355 randomly selected voters for the “Politbarometer” this week.

The margin of error is around three percentage points for a proportion of 40 percent and around two percentage points for a proportion of ten percent.
