"Hanni and Nanni. And of course five friends.” Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (FW) answered the question from Miesbach’s second mayor Astrid Güldner (Greens) as if shot from a pistol, what he liked to read in his childhood.

"Hanni and Nanni.

And of course five friends.” Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (FW) answered the question from Miesbach’s second mayor Astrid Güldner (Greens) as if shot from a pistol, what he liked to read in his childhood.

And he immediately revealed what his party and cabinet colleague, Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger, used to like to browse through: "Winnetou." Quasi the evidence for Güldner's statement shortly before: "Books accompany us for a lifetime." And the Miesbachers would are in a privileged position here: "We don't need Amazon, we have the book on the market."

The Miesbach bookstore was also the reason why the minister came to the district town on Friday morning.

For the 18th time, this has received the seal of quality for particularly valuable reading promotion.

"You've almost grown up," said Güldner.

Since 2003, the Ministry of Education and the Bavarian State Association of the German Book Trade Association have presented this award every year.

This year 181 bookstores were awarded.

According to a press release, the focus is on initiatives to promote reading, which the shops carry out in schools and kindergartens.

Celebration at the library

Rixta Rausch, who manages the book on the market together with Rosa Bauer as the owner, thanked not only Piazolo and the state association chairman Klaus Beckschulte at the ceremony between the bulging shelves, but also the headmasters and daycare center managers who were present.

"Without their contribution we would not be standing here today."

And probably not without the commitment of Regina Weber-Toepel, who has been looking after the children's book department for more than 20 years.

"My now 22-year-old daughter grew up with the books she recommended," praised Deputy Mayor Güldner.

Through her, she found out "that it is not so easy to reach the reading soul of the child".

Close contact with young readers

The fact that the Buch am Markt team has been successful for decades is shown by the responses from the preschool children from the Straß kindergarten in Miesbach and the third and fourth graders from the Hausham primary school, who the Minister of Education spontaneously asked about their reading habits.

"Even if you're all reading the same book, each of you will have different images in your head," Piazolo explained, explaining how a book differs from film and television.

And Beckschulte emphasized that with the right book in hand, reading, which is sometimes strenuous for beginners, comes naturally.

Book recommendation from the Minister

So that the school and kindergarten children don't go short of them either, Weber-Toepel presented lots of gifts: reading bags for the preschoolers and a copy of Yuval Noah Harari's bestseller "How we humans conquered the world" for the school library of the secondary schools.

The elementary school students, on the other hand, received the graphic novel “Iva, Samo and the Witch Lake”.

There was a recommendation for this from the Minister of Education himself.

"I know," said Piazolo.

"It's really exciting." Miesbach city councilor Inge Jooß (SPD) then wanted to know what the minister was reading himself from Piazolo.

He was also solid here.

“Mostly files in the car.” At home, however, there is a crime classic by Edgar Wallace on the bedside table.

"So that at least I have a bit of excitement in life here."
