Two days after Putin proclaimed “
forever
” the annexation of four regions in Ukraine, the Ukrainian armed forces recapture Lyman in the Donetsk region.
The surprise is that of a single camp.
For several weeks already, Lyman had been under pressure from troops in kyiv;
his encirclement came just as Putin was speaking on September 30.
The number of Russian soldiers captured, or killed while retreating to the Kreminna, is uncertain, but Serhiy Haidai, Ukrainian governor of Luhansk province, estimated on Friday at 5,000 the number of Russian soldiers still present in Lyman.
Haidai added that these men had only three options left: "
Flee, die or surrender. "
