At the start of the 23rd Oberland exhibition in Weilheim there was a cheesecake competition that caused a lot of emotions.

Weilheim – Elisabeth Kempfle had thought twice about making the long journey again.

But in the end, the 52-year-old from Pfaffenhofen was ambitious: Because at the last baking competition on the Orla three years ago, when it was about old cake recipes, she "only" took second place - "I stunk, that I admit," she says.

The effort was worth it: With her “triple cheesecake”, Kempfle made it to the top this time in the cheesecake competition organized by the Peitinger “Hauswirtschaftei” and had to shed a tear or two afterwards.

Although she's actually almost a pro, she often films herself baking and posts the videos on YouTube.

"But this is something completely different, I'm fixed and all," she said.

From pompous to inconspicuous everything was there

This also applied to Silvia Schlögel and her fellow campaigners.

They had organized the competition, which already existed eleven years ago and was the start of what is now a long series of cookery and baking books, and received more than 200 recipes, some of them from far away.

The selection was very difficult, said Schlögel in front of the anxiously waiting bakers and spectators, after all the recipes shouldn't be everyday ones.

This was also reflected in the selection of the ten final cakes: from a pear cheesecake, which was downright pompous and almost looked like a cake, to an almost inconspicuous, flat cheesecake, everything was there.

But because the seven-strong jury, which included Veronika Sonner (Offmühle) and Allgäu master confectioner Violetta Kristen, had to evaluate not only the appearance but also the consistency and taste, the cheesecakes, which were not so pompous, also had a chance.

Inner values count: Appearance alone does not promise victory

That's why district farmer and jury member Christine Sulzenbacher, when asked by Orla organizer Josef Albert Schmid, who bridged the waiting time with questions, only briefly revealed "I won't say!" - she knew that looks alone still mattered promises no victory.

Among other things, the jury had to evaluate the appearance and consistency of the cakes.

The unusual chocolate cheesecake by Dorothea Fading (Eichenau, district of Fürstenfeldbruck), for example, was an eye-catcher with its deep brown color, as was the "grandma's cheesecake" by Steffi Echtler from Hohenpeißenberg, which was refined with lots of sprinkles and came second.

"I always have to have sprinkles with me," revealed the 31-year-old.

She had refined her cake with a little Amaretto, which convinced the jury.

Monika Guggemos from Halblech (Ostallgäu) was also enthusiastic about her third place.

No wonder when it comes to the preparation: "The apples are from our own tree, and my husband chose the eggs for the cake for me in the morning and said: 'Take these, they're the prettiest,'" she says and laughs.

Fourth place went to Hildegard Lutz from Peiting with a cheesecake, fifth place to Sabine Obermüller from Miesbach for a more traditional but tasty cheesecake.

But everyone could feel like a winner, after all there were also wins for everyone.

In addition to the main prizes - an overnight stay at the Kenzenhütte, an alpaca hike, a meat basket, a photographer's voucher and a sausage and bacon basket - everyone could choose a cookbook or baking book that had already been published, and all ten recipes will also be used in the new cheesecake -Bach book, which will be published next year, immortalized.

That's how long the readers, who have acquired a taste for reading, have to be patient.

A TV report

about the competition was also shown in the BR evening show, it can be viewed here in the media library.
