Karl Lauterbach sees Germany "at war" with Russia.

Cabinet colleague Christine Lambrecht clearly contradicts the Minister of Health.

Berlin – German politics surrounding the Ukraine war repeatedly causes disputes in the traffic light coalition.

Representatives of the SPD, Greens and FDP have often clashed over the issue of arms deliveries.

While the FDP and the Greens - in the person of Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann or Anton Hofreiter - repeatedly advocate extensive support, Chancellor Olaf Scholz remains cautious.

On Sunday there was another crunch in the cabinet – this time between two social democrats.

Ukraine News: Lauterbach becomes clear on Twitter – “We are at war with Putin”

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) provided the trigger for the renewed debate on Saturday.

In a tweet, the 59-year-old clearly criticized the philosopher Richard David Precht, who had been critical of Ukraine's admission to NATO.

"What should kneeling in front of Putin do now?" Lauterbach asked himself in his tweet and made it clear: "We are at war with Putin and not his psychotherapists."

In a podcast by the editorial network Germany

, Precht had

demanded that individual NATO states should approach Russia and promise Vladimir Putin that Ukraine would not be admitted to NATO.

Clear words – especially for a federal minister.

Because one thing is certain: Even if NATO supports Ukraine with arms deliveries and financial aid in the war against Russia, the military alliance is not officially at war with Russia.

NATO's entry into the war would probably only be conceivable if Russia launched a direct attack on one of the member states.

Then the alliance case stipulated in NATO Article 5 would occur.

Lambrecht vs. Lauterbach: Minister of Defense contradicts her party colleague

The fact that Lauterbach, as a member of the government, nevertheless speaks openly of a war with Russia, also annoys the leadership in his own party.

Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) therefore clearly contradicted her party and ministerial colleague on Sunday.

"It is very clear - both for the German government and for the entire NATO: We will not become a war party," said Lambrecht on Sunday in the ARD program "Report from Berlin".

Lambrecht further emphasized that the principle of not becoming a party to the war “has guided us from the start.

And that hasn't changed either.” The minister returned from a visit to Ukraine on Sunday.

Among other things, she met her Ukrainian colleague Oleksiy Resnikov in the port city of Odessa.

There was an air alert during her visit: "We experienced this twice in a few hours and had to move it to a bunker," said Lambrecht.

“And for the people that is a reality there.

That's everyday life."

In view of these conditions, Lambrecht reiterated that Ukraine's air defenses in particular must be supported.

In the Russian war of aggression, this has "now become a very central focus," said the minister.

"And Germany will stand by Ukraine's side." The SPD politician recently announced the delivery of the Iris-T air defense system to Ukraine.

At least on this point, Lauterbach and Lambrecht should be on the same wavelength.
