Before Corona, Frankfurt Airport was one of the best networked airports in the world.

In the first ranking since the pandemic, the airport crashes mercilessly.

Frankfurt – It is a violent crash for Frankfurt Airport.

When Corona was still a long way off, Germany's largest airport was among the absolute world elite when it came to networking.

But according to the ranking by data analysis company OAG, that's history.

In the ranking of the best networked airports in the world, OAG evaluates the airports in terms of the size of the hub, the number of connections and the relevance of the airlines that take off and land at an airport.

OAG aviation experts analyzed flight data between September 2021 and August 2022 from the 100 largest airports.

During the global corona pandemic, there was no reliable basis for this, which is why a ranking was created in 2022 for the first time since 2019, reports fnp.de.

Frankfurt Airport falls back to 22nd place in the ranking of the most networked airports

Using the data collected, a number of maximum flights was calculated for August 12, 2022, the busiest day of the year.

And the result shows: the airports in Europe are the big losers.

While Frankfurt Airport was still in second place in 2019, the airport has now fallen back to 30th place.

Lufthansa remains the most dominant airline at Frankfurt Airport with 62 percent of all flights.

But even the winner of 2019 falls rapidly.

London Heathrow will only be in 22nd place in 2022. From a European perspective, Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris ranks between London and Frankfurt.

After all, Munich Airport made it to 36th place in the global ranking.

Network ranking: Frankfurt Airport is losing a lot of places due to the corona pandemic

Following the resumption of global air travel during the coronavirus pandemic, the slow recovery from the aviation crisis has impacted global connectivity, OGA writes in a statement.

Combinations of flights and destinations led to serious changes in the ranking.

Frankfurt Airport: Experts expect normalization in air traffic

While Europe's airports, such as Frankfurt Airport, lost a lot of space, the airports in the United States moved up significantly.

Chicago (O'Hare), Dallas/Fort Worth and Atlanta (Hartsfield-Jackson) made it onto the podium.

Ten other airports in the USA made it into the top 20 and benefited from the extensive domestic traffic, while air traffic to other countries and other continents came to a virtual standstill at the major hubs in Europe.

However, experts assume that air traffic will return to normal in the coming months and that European airports such as Frankfurt Airport will perform better again.

However, one factor is that the planned flight connections can be started as planned.

In the past few months, there have been repeated failures at Frankfurt Airport due to strikes or a lack of staff.
