In matters of Corsican or Basque terrorism, court decisions, scrutinized by local nationalists, always have political consequences.
In a few days, two diametrically opposed decisions further illustrated this observation.
On the Corsican side, the sentencing chamber of the Paris Court of Appeal rejected, on September 29, the request for a probationary semi-freedom measure for conditional freedom filed by Pierre Alessandri, a member of the commando who murdered the prefect Claude Érignac on February 6, 1998. On May 12, the sentence enforcement court gave the green light, but the national anti-terrorist prosecutor's office appealed, given the seriousness of the crime and the risk of trouble to public order.
It was Alessandri's third parole application since 2019.
