Leung Kin-fai, a 50-year-old man, was suspected of stabbing a male police officer outside the Sogo Department Store in Causeway Bay on July 1 last year and stabbing himself in the chest with a knife.
More than a year later, the Coroner's Court will start a pre-inquest review of the incident today (3rd) behind closed doors, which will be handled by Coroner Gao Weixiong.
It is reported that Police Commissioner Xiao Zeyi and the injured police officers are all listed as interested parties, and the family members have not sent legal representatives or attended the court in person.
The inquest will start on November 30 and is expected to take 6 days. The coroner will call more than a dozen witnesses, including the injured police officer, to testify, but it has not yet been determined whether there will be jurors.
The incident occurred on the evening of July 1, 2021, when a 28-year-old male police officer of the Mobile Force was suspected of being stabbed with a knife by the deceased Liang Jianhui.
Later, Liang was suspected of stabbing himself with a knife in his chest. Several police officers stepped forward and worked together to subdue him. He was later sent to the hospital and died.
Secretary for Security Tang Bing-keung described the incident as a "lone wolf-style local terrorist attack" at the time.
