In October, you should definitely grab the pruning shears, because five plants benefit from pruning this month.

According to the Federal Nature Conservation Act, you can cut hedges again in Germany from October 1st.

Because from March to September there is a risk that animals will nest in the plants.

But other plants also benefit from pruning in October.

In the garden, October is all about pruning.

As reported by the

Norddeutsche Rundfunk

(NDR), the following trees in particular benefit from pruning in October:

  • conifers like hedges

  • ornamental trees

  • roses

  • Lawn

  • perennials

Conifers such as thuja, pine or spruce are not only popular as hedge plants that protect against prying neighbors – the evergreen coniferous trees are also convincing as solitary plants.

In October you should prune the relatively fast-growing plants, even if you have already lent a hand in spring.

As a popular garden plant that reaches considerable heights, spruce hedges in particular benefit from pruning in autumn.

Don't prune conifers too late, however, as frost can damage the plant.

Opinions differ when it comes to pruning perennials in autumn: while the

NDR

does not consider this to be necessary for herbaceous plants, the YouTube channel

master consultation hour with Ruth

sees it differently.

According to gardener Ruth, you should not cut the perennials close to the ground, but cutting back the upper shoots will help to keep them healthy.

Insects and other animals also have a retreat where they can hibernate.

In the case of an infestation with powdery mildew, a cut also makes sense, as Ruth reports.

knows.
