Anyone who climbs the Benediktenwand in the near future will be surprised: there hasn't been a summit cross there since Saturday.

The Benediktbeuern fire brigade dismantled it with the support of the mountain rescue service.

Benediktbeuern

- As reported, the cross is to be renewed next year on the occasion of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the fire brigade.

As reported by fire department director Sebastian Rieger, the helping men and women were divided into two groups.

“The first 30 people left at 6 a.m., the second 30 at 7 a.m..” From the material cableway, we continued on foot to the summit.

The men and women had many backpacks, chainsaws and tools with them to saw up and dismantle the cross.

Two Lord's Prayer spoken and Benediktenwandlied sung

Two Our Fathers were first said on the cross and then the Benediktenwandlied sung before the dismantling began.

First, reports Rieger, the two crossbeams were sawn off, then the cross was cut around.

The 15 linear meters of wood were cut into parts, each 70 centimeters long, so that they could be transported in the Kraxen.

Iron parts, ropes, connections and anchors were also loosened and stowed away.

Then it was back down into the valley.

The action went without accidents.

“We are very grateful for that,” says Rieger.

After all, the weather was anything but good, it was wet and foggy.

The previous cross was from 1958. "The crossbeams are pretty lazy," says Rieger.

"A replacement is definitely necessary." Where the dismantled parts are stored is not disclosed.

In the coming year, however, there will be "something with them" as part of the celebrations, Rieger announces.

In 2023 a new cross will be carried up

Preparations for the new cross have already begun.

The fire brigade and mountain rescue service also take care of that.

As in 1958, it is to be carried to the summit again.

The campaign is one of several that the Benediktbeuern fire brigade is planning to celebrate its anniversary.
