The committee of the Swedish Academy will announce today (Monday) the first winner of the Nobel Prize, in the "Physiology or Medicine" category.
This opens a week of awarding the prestigious award which will end on the 10th of the month.
The announcement from Stockholm is expected to arrive around 2:00 PM (Israel time).
Tomorrow the winner (or winners) will be announced in the physics category and then the winners in the fields of chemistry, literature, Nobel Peace Prize and economics.
The members of the committee for physiology or medicine consists of five members of the Karolinska Institute, one of the largest medical research centers in Europe, which is responsible for selecting the candidates.
The committee is chaired by Dr. Nils Goran Larsson who specializes in the mitochondrial genome.
Last year, the prize was awarded jointly to David Julius and Adam Patpotian "for their contribution to the discovery of heat and touch receptors".
The prize, named after the Swedish scientist and inventor of dynamite Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), is traditionally awarded in the Swedish capital where a special committee works on the selection of the candidates under a veil of secrecy and the names of the contenders are revealed after 50 years.
Among the prominent winners of the prestigious prize are a large number of Israelis, including: the writer Shai Agnon (1966), former Prime Minister Menachem Begin (1978), former President Shimon Peres who shared the prize with former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (1994), economist Daniel Kahneman (2002), the scientists Avraham Hershko and Aharon Chachanover (2004), the economist Israel Oman (2005), the scientist Ada Yonat (2009), the scientist Dan Shechtman (2011), the scientists Aryeh Warshel and Michael Levit (2013) and the economist Joshua Angrist ( 2021).
