A day before Yom Kippur, more than a hundred thousand people are expected to participate tonight (Monday) in the central forgiveness ceremony at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

This is the first time that the traditional event returns to its original format after two years in which it was held in a reduced format due to the ban on holding mass events following the spread of the corona virus in Israel.

The police were deployed with increased forces and most of the roads in the city area were blocked to traffic.

The prayer will be led by Israel's chief rabbis Rabbi David Lau, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, Rabbi of the Western Wall and the Holy Places Shmuel Rabinovitch and the well-known bard Moshe Habusha.

This is the largest class in a series of forgiveness events held in the last month at the Western Wall and all over the country in which a total of hundreds of thousands of people participated.

Tonight, the eve of Yom Kippur, the prayer is considered the peak of the period of mercy and forgiveness.

The prayer tonight will mark 40 days of forgiveness in the Sephardi custom, and about two weeks in the Ashkenazi custom, in one class, which brings together thousands of worshipers: women and men, secular and religious.

The prayer also ends the period of "Ten Days of Repentance" - the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, which are considered particularly significant days.

According to Jewish tradition, on Rosh Hashanah, Adam's judgment was written and on Yom Kippur his judgment was sealed.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation issued a statement that, among other things, states that "the entrances to the Old City and the Western Wall will be closed if there is congestion" and that "the public is requested to obey the instructions of the Israel Police and the instructions of the ushers in favor of the Western Wall island. Also, the Old City will be closed to private vehicles, the public is requested to come by public transport.

The next 24 hours are also the last 24 hours for the controversial "expiation" custom, in which a male rooster is taken for a man and a female chicken for a woman, and they are twirled around their heads and say "this is my suit, this is my exchange, this is my atonement".

In recent years, many keep the custom with fish or money that is donated to charity to avoid animal cruelty.
