The Ukrainian armed forces continue to gain territory. If reports of progress on the banks of the Dnieper are confirmed, thousands of Russian soldiers could be trapped.

In the course of their counter-offensive, Ukrainian troops in the east and south of the country have apparently recorded further successes.

In the Luhansk region, Ukrainian soldiers have already established themselves near the city of Lysychansk, a military spokesman for the Moscow-controlled Luhansk militias wrote in the Telegram news service.

However, the Ukrainian units are under constant fire from the Russian army.

According to Ukrainian sources, the village of Bilohorivka has been under Ukrainian control for a long time.

Previously, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj had also confirmed an advance of his forces in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson and the recapture of the local towns of Archanhelske and Myrolyubivka.

"The story of the liberation of Lyman in the Donetsk region has become the most popular in the media," Zelenskyy said in his evening video message.

"But the achievements of our soldiers are not limited to Lyman."

A Ukrainian advance along the Dnieper has not yet been officially announced.

An adviser to the Kyiv Interior Ministry, Anton Gerashchenko, released a video showing Ukrainian soldiers raising their national flag in the village of Solota Balka.

The area lies between the cities of Cherson and Zaporizhia, whose regions Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on Friday as annexed.

The representative of the Russian occupation administration of the Kherson region, Kirill Stremusov, also spoke about a Ukrainian advance in the direction of Dudchany, about 30 kilometers further south.

Rob Lee of the US think tank Foreign Policy Research Institute, on the other hand, quoted Russian bloggers who reported that their troops had withdrawn to Dudchany.

"When so many Russian channels sound the alarm, it usually means they're in trouble," Lee wrote on Twitter.

Should Ukrainian forces make further advances on the banks of the river, thousands of Russian soldiers could be trapped.

The Dnieper is very wide in places, and Ukraine destroyed most of the bridges.

Last Friday, more than seven months after the start of the war, Russia annexed the only partially conquered regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Cherson.

Despite this, the Ukrainian army is continuing its counter-offensive.

Since the beginning of September they have already liberated most of the eastern region of Kharkiv and most recently also recaptured the strategically important town of Lyman in Donetsk.

As a result, the Ukrainian units in the east could advance further deep into Russian-occupied territory.
