At least 15 prisoners were killed, and 20 others injured, in last night's mutiny and rioting in one of Ecuador's largest prisons.
The French Press Agency quoted the Prison Administration Authority as saying: “The tactical units continue operations to regain control of the prison located on the outskirts of the city of Lattakunga in the south of the country,” which has witnessed since February 2021 seven massacres linked to the drug trade, in which more than 400 people were killed.
She added: "The armed forces provide support to the police forces in the outer perimeter of the prison, and this prison is one of the largest prisons in Ecuador, with a population of about 4,300 prisoners."
According to official figures, prisons in Ecuador include about 35,000 prisoners, including a large number of gang members fighting to control the drug trade, and these prisons often witness violent clashes between them.
