Greens and ADFC members campaign for a large participation in the referendum at a Radl demo.

You complain about a few points in Wolfratshausen.

Wolfratshausen – The target is undoubtedly ambitious: Around one million eligible voters from the Free State would have to sign in the town halls next spring to enforce a referendum: This could accelerate the expansion of cycle expressways and the implementation of other bicycle-friendly measures in Bavaria.

The local branch of the Wolfratshauser Greens and members of the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) beat the drum for the referendum on Friday during the final rally on Marienplatz after a bike rally with urgent appeals.

Cyclists want more rights: “We have to put pressure on”

Greens local association spokesman Hans-Georg Anders first recalled the goal announced by the Bavarian state government in 2017 to increase the proportion of bicycle traffic from ten to 20 percent by 2025.

"Right now we're only at 11 percent, so we have to hurry," said Anders.

With a view to the situation in the Loisachstadt, he found that there was a considerable risk potential for cyclists on many streets.

For example, the Greens spokesman would like Geltinger Straße, which is mainly used by schoolchildren, to be converted into a cycle path.

Geretsriederin Resi Harth offers rickshaw rides in her hometown and often cycles to the neighboring town of Wolfratshausen.

She thinks the cycle path next to the B11 is too narrow.

Hans Schmidt (Greens), environmental and climate officer in the Wolfratshausen city council, is committed to a comprehensive turnaround in traffic.

Since the problem areas in the rafting town are mainly on federal and state roads, the city administration has little influence, admitted Schmid.

Against this background, ADFC member Werner Grimmeiss suggested the appointment of a mobility officer in the Wolfratshausen town hall.

Schmidt believes, however, that a Bavaria-wide vote in favor of cyclist protection would have an even greater effect.

"We have to put pressure on, and we can do that with the cycling decision," he emphasized on Friday.

Schmidt was backed by Jakob Koch (Greens).

The spokesman for the environmental committee in the district council complained that the district lacked a continuous cycle connection between Bad Tölz and Geretsried.

But even in villages that are not connected to the new express bus line or are insufficiently connected to public transport, it makes sense to promote the cycling infrastructure.

"If we don't expand cycling, we won't achieve the climate targets," Koch stated.

Referendum for cyclists: 25000 votes are required

Paulus Guter, board member of ADFC Bayern, counted the signatures already received for the Radentscheid on the first weekend in October in Munich.

Before that, at the rally in Wolfratshausen, he spoke of the "economic damage" that drivers would cause due to the CO2 emissions from their cars.

Until October 31, citizens still have the opportunity to enter themselves in the signature lists.

25,000 votes are required for the referendum to be admissible.

Once this hurdle has been cleared, signature lists are expected to be available in the town halls in the Free State for two weeks from spring 2023.

If there are more than one million votes, there will be a referendum – unless the state parliament gives in beforehand and fulfills the wishes of the cycling initiative.
