Today is the Double Ninth Festival, many filial sons and grandsons go to the cemetery to worship their ancestors. The FEHD has promoted green burials in recent years, and has set up ash-scattering memorial gardens in different locations, including a dedicated area for gratuitous donation of remains for medical research purposes.

Affected by the fifth wave of the epidemic, the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Hong Kong admitted that at the beginning of this year, due to the extension of the cremation procedure of the FEHD and the suspension of the anatomy class for medical students, the delivery time of the "General Teacher" was prolonged, and some applications could not be processed, and it has now returned to normal.

A family member shared the experience of being rejected by two medical schools when he donated his body after suffering from a rare disease and passed away. He hopes that there will be better arrangements in the future, so that the dream of the deceased will come true, and it will also benefit the medical community in Hong Kong, so that more patients can receive timely treatment .

Relatives suffer from rare cancer and have been fighting the disease for 6 years. There are only about 400 similar cases in Hong Kong

The Garden of Remembrance at the Chinese Permanent Cemetery in Tseung Kwan O is one of the designated green burial facilities of the FEHD. The special area for the Scattering of Ashes is co-operated by Huayong Association with the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Department of Anatomy of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. In May and October 2019, the "Mr. Wuyan" and "Teacher Dazhu" were launched to release the ashes.

There are two memorial walls in the area. After the body donor has successfully retired, relatives can choose to scatter the ashes of the body donor in the memorial garden. "A commemorative plaque was erected to express their silent contribution to the society.

Ms. Jian, who is in her 40s, would come with her relatives and friends to pay tribute to her father, who was engraved on the commemorative plaque of "Teacher General", on birthdays or special festivals. She pointed out that her father was diagnosed early and passed away. Apple founder Steve Jobs also suffered from a rare cancer "pancreatic endocrine nerve line tumor". This slow-growing tumor has only about 400 cases in Hong Kong. It will gradually grow without signs until the patient has abdominal distension, When the symptoms such as abdominal pain and rapid weight loss had developed to an advanced stage and spread to other organs, my father had received multiple standard palladium treatments ineffective. After 6 years of struggle with the disease, he passed away at the age of 63.

She recalled that her father once saw the CUHK Faculty of Medicine's publicity about "Mr. Silent" in a TV drama, and stated that he would donate his remains to CUHK for medical research after his death. She turned to the School of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Hong Kong for inquiries, and informed her father that she had a rare disease medical record. She was eventually taken in by the hospital, and she successfully donated her body for medical education. Cremation procedure, arrange family members to scatter ashes in Tseung Kwan O Memorial Garden.

The fifth wave of the epidemic once affected the willingness of the deceased to leave the library of "General Teacher"

Influenced by her father, Ms. Kan said that her mother also indicated that she would donate her body as a "Teacher of the Body" or "Teacher Silent" after her death to support medical research in Hong Kong. She believes that it has special educational significance for the society and patients, and supports more people to participate in the donation. The practice of the corpse, but I am worried that the number of places is limited, but because the cold storage is full or the space is insufficient, it prevents the deceased from reaching the noble will, and becomes the ashes that cannot contribute to the society until the last moment after death.

In addition to the seasonal impact of more deaths, the epidemic will also hinder the intention to donate remains.

A spokesman for the School of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Hong Kong said that the hospital stores the remains of about 100 "general teachers", of which an average of 80 to 90 are dissected each year for medical research purposes. However, due to the fifth wave of the epidemic, medical students cannot conduct face-to-face interviews. Due to problems such as physical anatomy classes and the delay of the cremation procedure, it took a long time for the remains to be released from the warehouse, so that other "general teachers" could no longer be accepted. It has gradually returned to normal.

The spokesman also said that there are other factors for whether the body was accepted or not, including that the body should not have infectious diseases at the time of death, the body weight should not exceed 80 kilograms, the limbs could not be straight when lying flat, the cause of death was natural death, there was no severe edema, and the family members of the deceased were not. For objection to donation arrangements, etc., interested applicants can call 3917 6334 or email for details.

A spokesman for the FEHD responded that there were 8,018 cases of green burial in Hong Kong last year, accounting for about 15.6% of the total number of deaths in Hong Kong, and 6,614 in the first eight months of this year, accounting for about 14.7% of the total number of deaths in Hong Kong. At present, the FEHD has set up 13 gardens of remembrance in its 9 columbaria for the public to disperse the ashes of the deceased.

Columbaria locations include Cape Collinson, Diamond Hill, Wo Hop Shek, Fu Shan, Kwai Chung, Cheung Chau, Peng Chau, Lamma Island and Tsang Tsui, Tuen Mun.

FEHD has also been encouraging NGOs and religious groups to build gardens of remembrance in suitable places.

Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery and Pokfulam Chinese Christian Cemetery have respectively installed green burial facilities.

In addition, a garden of remembrance is under construction at the Cape Collinson Hong Kong Buddhist Cemetery and will be put into service at a later date.

Apart from the Garden of Remembrance, members of the public can also apply for the free ferry service provided by the FEHD or arrange their own boats to go to three designated locations, namely the waters east of Tap Mun, east of Tung Lung Chau and south of West Lamma Strait. Release of the ashes of the deceased. Free ferry service is now available every Saturday.

During the Spring and Autumn Festivals, the FEHD will also arrange memorial activities at sea to facilitate the public to go to the sea to remember the deceased.

In order to further promote green burial, the FEHD launched a central register of green burials in 2019 to encourage citizens to plan their after-life arrangements in advance and register their wish to choose green burial.

When the registrant's relatives or friends apply for cremation services after the registrant's death, the FEHD can know the registrant's wishes from the register and follow up appropriately.

As of August this year, there have been more than 8,700 registrations.

In promoting the use of online memorial services, the FEHD launched the "Endless Memory" website in June 2010. The public can set up memorial pages for the deceased for free. In 2018, the FEHD launched its mobile application to facilitate users to browse the Internet anytime, anywhere. In memory of the loved ones who have passed away.
