Puppies rescued from the illegal pet trade are nursed and socialized in a specially built sanctuary at the Sonnenhof.

Now the station has been ceremoniously inaugurated.

Rottenbuch – For Thomas Schröder, it is an event that he looks at with mixed feelings.

The President of the German Animal Welfare Association admits this just before he cuts the red ribbon with the scissors to officially open the new wing of the building.

The former, because what had been planned last year but had to be postponed because of Corona can finally be made up for: the opening of the new puppy sanctuary at the Sonnenhof in Rottenbuch.

But Schröder is saddened by the fact that such a building is necessary at all – after all, it stands for a development that is unfortunately becoming more and more widespread in the age of open borders: the disgraceful activities of the international illegal animal trade.

“It would be nice if this building were simply superfluous.

But unfortunately that's not the case."

But then joy prevails - not only for Schröder, but for everyone involved in this memorable morning on the Sonnenhof site in Hochkreit, a district of the municipality of Rottenbuch.

"The Sonnenhof is a heart project of the German Animal Welfare Association, today we came together to celebrate the expansion," says Schröder happily when he finally cuts the ribbon.

Rottenbuch's second mayor Vitus Gansler speaks of a "flagship project", Hannah Wendt, veterinarian and head of the facility, says that there is now a new home for 25 puppies.

The new building has five rooms with an adjoining quarantine and infirmary as well as a feeding and laundry room - everything that is necessary to make the animals' young, endangered life as comfortable as possible.

The aim is to take in young animals that come from illegal transports.

Puppy sanctuary in Rottenbuch: Animals often show severe behavioral problems

Brigitte Rusche, Vice-President of the German Animal Welfare Association, explained that their number had skyrocketed in recent years in particular: "This affects the entire federal territory, but Bavaria in particular." major organizational problems.

Although the puppies are housed in nearby animal shelters, they rarely have the appropriate structural conditions - quarantine - and an infirmary.

The following applies especially to the puppies: The more mistakes are made in this crucial phase of rearing and socialization, the more difficult it is to correct it later.

Due to the early separation of mother and siblings, these animals often show severe behavioral problems.

In the Sonnenhof, guidelines are now to be developed as to how the future prospects of the young dogs can be further improved despite their bad start in life.

"That's what it's about, that's why we're here.

I'm looking forward to it," Schröder concludes his speech.
