The death toll in Florida due to Hurricane Ian rose yesterday (Monday) to at least 101, days after the storm reached the country's shores at a magnitude 4 and sowed complete destruction in coastal cities.
At least 54 people have been killed in Lee County alone, Sheriff Carmine Marsano said — up from a previous toll of 45.
24 deaths were recorded in Charlotte County, compared to the previous figure of 12. Hurricane Ian also killed eight people in Colmere County, five in Volusia County, three in Sarasota, two in Manatee County.
Four people were killed when the hurricane hit North Carolina.

More than 1,600 people have been rescued in southwest and central Florida since last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis' office said.
More than 491,000 homes and businesses are still without power, according to the PowerOutage.us website.
Hurricane Ian, estimated to be one of the costliest storms in Florida history, destroyed entire neighborhoods along the West Coast and inland cities such as Orlando.
The rescue teams are forced to continue their efforts even though some are faced with the fact that their homes have also been destroyed.
Authorities in Lee County are now facing criticism for issuing the first mandatory evacuation alert just a day before the hurricane hit, even though emergency plans recommended an earlier release.
DeSantis said county authorities acted appropriately when they issued the first warning on Tuesday, less than 24 hours before Ian hit the West Florida coast and a day after other counties issued evacuation alerts.
