The death toll from Hurricane Ian in Florida and North Carolina rose to 101, days after the storm made landfall and rescue teams continued their search for survivors or missing persons.

CNN quoted local officials as saying that at least 54 people had died in Lee County only, whose officials face criticism for their response to the storm and for their delay in issuing evacuation orders to the county's residents. Charlotte County also recorded 24 deaths, and the rest of the deaths were distributed in Collier, Volusia, Sarasota, and Manatee counties.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' office said more than 1,600 people have been rescued from Hurricane Ian's path in parts of southwest and central Florida since last week.

In turn, Roger Degarlaes, Director of Lee County, pointed out that in some areas, electricity may not be restored for 30 days due to the destruction of the electrical infrastructure.

Hurricane Ian caused great devastation in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday, and caused power outages for 1.9 million people, while the US authorities declared a state of emergency in Florida and South Carolina.
