In the face of the deadly crackdown on protests in Iran sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini after his arrest by the police

The European Union said on Tuesday it was considering sanctions over the deadly crackdown on protests in Iran sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini more than two weeks ago.

“With the member states, we will continue to examine all the options at our disposal, including restrictive measures”, declared the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, in plenary session in Strasbourg.

“Mahsa Amini was 22 years old.

She was visiting the capital of her country.

The morality police arrested her simply because of her headscarf and she then ended up in hospital where she died shortly afterwards,” the Spanish official recalled.

A “disproportionate” response from the security forces

“After that, after his death, should I say his assassination, we saw a wave of outrage turn into nationwide protests in Iran,” he added.

Josep Borrell deplored a "disproportionate" response from the security forces.

This "caused the loss of dozens of human lives and arrests".

“In Iran as elsewhere, people have the right to demonstrate peacefully.

It's as simple as that.

And it is clear that this right has not been guaranteed”, further accused the head of EU diplomacy.

At least 92 people have been killed in Iran, according to the Oslo-based NGO Iran Human Rights, while authorities put the death toll at around 60, including 12 members of the security forces.

Several hundred people were arrested.

Reinforced by the students, the revolt is now taking on an unprecedented scale.

In Iran, the protest continues, the repression too

A package of sanctions prepared for October 17

The EU introduced restrictive measures to sanction serious human rights violations in Iran on April 12, 2011. Additional measures were added on March 23, 2012, including an embargo on equipment that could be used for internal repression and on equipment that can be used to monitor or intercept the Internet and telephone communications on mobile or fixed networks.

These sanctions are in force until 2023. A new set of sanctions could be prepared for the meeting of EU foreign ministers on October 17.

Unanimity is required for its adoption.

Paris: “Target those responsible”

Several member states are calling for EU sanctions against those responsible for the repression.

France had previously said it was working within the EU to push through an asset freeze and travel ban against those responsible for the repression in Iran.

The objective is to "respond to repression by targeting those responsible for it", underlined the Minister of Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna during the session of questions to the government at the National Assembly.

Deputies and members of the government observed a minute of silence there on Tuesday in tribute to the victims of Iranian repression.

“Such measures can impact regime decision makers in Iran as they apply repression on the one hand, and on the other hand many of them send their children to live in the West.

It is about freezing their assets and freezing their rights to travel,” she said.

Germany called last week for EU sanctions against Iran.

“Within the EU, I am doing everything possible to put in place sanctions against those in Iran who beat women to death and shoot protesters in the name of religion,” said the head of German diplomacy last Thursday. Annalena Baerbock.
