Lula's concern

2022-10-04T10:44:31.975Z

What has surprised everyone has been Bolsonaro's ability to impose his most extremist candidates in key states

That the elections in Brazil have been a surprise is indisputable.

The innumerable polls that predicted a victory for Lula in the first round have been terribly wrong, as have those who criticized Bolsonaro's tactic of centering his attacks on the Workers' Party (PT) on the issue of corruption instead of insisting on in economic issues, in the hunger of the poorest or in the tragedy of the pandemic.

Lula was wrong to think that what would give him victory in the first round would be the issue of the economy and the memory of his past governments with their fight against poverty.

He was so sure that he didn't even present a government program appealing to the fact that his past triumphs were enough for them to believe in him.

And Bolsonaro was right, against all odds, when he focused his attacks on Lula on the issue of corruption, which earned him a year and a half in jail and the fact that the Supreme Court annulled his sentences did little for him.

This has been demonstrated by the totally unexpected fact that the two great protagonists of Lava Jato, the mythical former judge Sérgio Moro, who had been Bolsonaro's Minister of Justice, and Deltan Dallagnol, the young and fearsome prosecutor of the Republic, who considered themselves finished and that Lula's dream with his possible victory was to be able to see them judged and imprisoned, both have entered politics and have been elected.

Moro as a senator of the Republic, his wife as a deputy from Sao Paolo and Dallagnol as the most voted deputy in his State.

That news of the resurrection in some way of Lava Jato with the entry of its great protagonists into Congress, which shields them judicially and now makes them two great enemies of Lula within politics, is from one point of view even psychological, the worst thing that could have happened to the PT and that will give Bolsonaro ammunition to continue his tactic of dusting off the corruption cases of past governments of the left.

All of this is going to force Lula and the PT, pushed by the other 9 parties that support him, to review their entire strategy for the new battle that lies ahead, at the same time that it will serve the far-right government to continue trying to revive the sins of corruption attributed to the governments of Lula, who will now find it more difficult to try to deny or minimize.

At the same time, this will serve Bolsonaro in cases of corruption in his government to insist on the issue of past corruption scandals of his political opponents, which he will try to keep alive in the new elections that lie ahead.

In view of Bolsonaro's victory in so many states with his tactic of mercilessly attacking the opposition for its sins of corruption, be it Lula that his party, the PT, will have in this second round, which is presented as a new election with new unknowns, review its position before society on the issue of corruption that the elections have shown is still a live issue in public opinion.

It is a raw nerve that the left has not known how to bravely confront, recognizing his sins without trying to deny them by making use of the lifeline that the Supreme Court threw at him and that allowed Lula to return with force to the arena of politics.

Although it may seem like a paradox, despite the fact that Lula and the parties that support him have won the number of votes in the elections, in reality what has surprised everyone has been Bolsonaro's ability to impose his most extremist candidates in the governments of so many key states with the possibility of being able to win also in Sao Paolo, the economic and financial heart of the country.

Lula has done well to minimize the political and unexpected victory of his adversary and continue to insist that he will end up winning the battle to return to government and to try now in the second round to win over a few million votes of those disillusioned with politics by offering them better days especially for the poorest.

And at the same time, faced with the reality of the facts, he will have to present a new and concrete program of what he intends to do in the face of an unexpected reality that has surprised everyone.

He is no longer going to use the argument that he does not need to present a concrete program under the excuse that he has already demonstrated his political capacity in his previous governments.

We are in effect

This second round of the Brazilian elections, which in reality will be a new election, will not fail to reveal how profound the political crisis that shakes the world globally is and that makes it difficult and dangerous to rest on the laurels of a past that has already been dismantled and overcome by the new and dangerous challenges aggravated by the jaws of a new war that no one is yet capable of prophesying how it may end and what profound changes it may have in the political crisis that globalization is undergoing.

The old political prescriptions seem to have lost force and the new ones are presented as a dark mystery that not even the best fortune-tellers are capable of deciphering today.
