Margaret of Denmark apologizes "as a mother" for taking titles from her grandchildren: "I have underestimated my decision"

Five days after announcing the reduction of the Danish royal family, the queen has issued a statement acknowledging that she did not know that Prince Joachim and his children would feel so upset

Queen Margaret of Denmark has lamented the reaction of her youngest son, Prince Joachim, to her decision to remove the title of prince and princess from her children, although she remains firm.

“I have made my resolution as a queen, mother and grandmother, but as a mother and grandmother I have underestimated the extent to which my youngest son and his family would be affected.

It has made a great impression on me and I am sorry, ”said the Danish monarch in a statement published on her social networks on Monday night.

The Danish royal house announced the decision by surprise last week, which will come into force on January 1, justifying it by the queen's desire that these grandchildren can form their "own life" without the obligations of the institution.

The announcement was also linked to a previous one from 2016, in which it was warned that Prince Christian, son of his eldest son, Federico, would probably be the only one of the queen's eight grandchildren who will receive an allowance from the State as an adult. .

The resolution affects four of the eight grandchildren of Margarita II: Nicolás, 23, and Félix, three years younger, the result of Joaquín's first marriage to Countess Alejandra;

and Enrique, 13, and Athena, 10, from his second marriage to Princess Mary.

Alejandra already reacted the same day, showing her "sadness" and "shock" on behalf of the family, while her ex-husband did so the next day with statements to the two Danish tabloids.

Joaquín assured that he had been informed in May that his children would lose the royal title when they turned 25, but that five days before the announcement he was notified of the change in plans.

“I am very, very sad to see them sad and not understanding what has happened to them,” said Joaquín, who spoke of “punishment” and hinted that his relationship with his mother was not good.

Last Friday, Princess Mary, wife of Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark, also reacted to the queen's decision, assuring that they would review the title of their children - with the exception of Christian - "when the time comes."

Hours later, from Paris, it was Prince Joachim who spoke to the Danish media together with her wife, Marie, where they assured that since the queen's wish was made public, he had not had any further communication with she.

In her last statement, Margarita assured that she had been meditating on her resolution for some time and that her "obligation" and her "desire" were for the monarchy to adapt to the times, which from time to time implied "difficult decisions."

“No one should doubt that my sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren are my great joy and pride.

Now I hope that as a family we can find peace of mind and a path in this situation, ”she stated.

“Being a holder of a royal title implies a series of commitments and tasks that, in the future, will fall to a few members of the royal family.

This adjustment, which I see as necessary to ensure the future of the monarchy, I want it to be made in my own time [of reign]”, the queen affirmed in her statement, acknowledging that despite this decision as monarch, as matriarch of the family she had underestimated the power of that decision.

Margarita has four other grandchildren, sons of Federico and Princess Mary: Christian, the second in line to the Danish throne, 15 years old;

Isabella, 14, and twins Vincent and Josefina, 11.
