The Civic Party held a brainstorming session on the 18th last week to discuss the way forward.

Party Chairman Liang Jiajie said after the meeting that everyone should think about the value of the existence of political parties in today's political environment, and whether the society still needs the Civic Party.

Leung Ka-kit recently issued a "Chairman's Letter" to his party members, stating that if the Civic Party is to continue to operate, it must have "people willing to serve as executive committee members" and "something that can be done."

Liang Jiajie told "Hong Kong 01" that according to his knowledge, among the 7 members of the executive committee, including himself, no one is willing to stay in office for the time being. Disband the program and send the "Last Ride".

Will not actively invite party members to serve as executive committee members

Liang Jiajie mentioned in the "Chairman's Letter" that the consensus reached by the party members who participated in the discussion at the brainstorming meeting last month was that everyone agreed that in order to continue the party, there must be possible things and people who are willing to serve as executive committee members.

"How can the Civic Party go on today when it can no longer run for elections, cannot raise funds, and its talents are withering away? It really needs the insight and dedication of the party members."

At present, the Civic Party Executive Committee has a total of 7 members, including Chairman Leung Ka Kit, Vice Chairman (Internal Affairs) Lai Yan Piao, Secretary General Leung Ka Shan, Treasurer Cai Kai Sing, Hong Kong Island Branch Chairman Leung Siu Sun, New Territories East Branch Chairman Rong Mingzhou, and Kowloon East Branch Chairman Yellow crane woos.

Liang Jiajie replied to the inquiry that according to his understanding, the seven executive committee members did not intend to stay in office, and he would not actively invite party members to serve: "If there is really no one to pick up the office (the executive committee changes), it will be sent to the Citizens Party for the last time. process.” That is to say, the dissolution process is initiated, but it is emphasized that the final decision must be left to the general meeting of members.

In the constitution of the Civic Party, the dissolution procedures and thresholds are not listed. Liang Jiajie pointed out that the Executive Committee is studying the relevant procedures.

The Civic Party was established in March 2006. It was initially positioned as a "big party" dominated by the middle class and professionals. After more than ten years of evolution, the party's image has turned aggressive after the turmoil of the amendment in 2019. He has contacted foreign countries many times and suggested to sanction mainland China and Hong Kong over human rights issues. In the planned Legislative Council election in 2020, the party's candidates were massively DQ.

Since the implementation of the "Hong Kong National Security Law" and the subsequent pro-democracy primary election, the Civic Party has gradually become more low-key. He was sued to quit the party, and later published an open letter saying that the Civic Party "has completed its historical task" and called for its dissolution.

In the past year, the Civic Party has held no public events in its name.

Leung Jiajie told reporters after a brainstorming session last month that when some pro-democracy political parties are not allowed to "cook money for food" and participate in elections, Hong Kong people or those in power need to think about whether some political parties still have room to survive in Hong Kong today.
