UN Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned North Korea’s renewed missile test.

"This is clearly an escalation, something the Secretary-General condemns," spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in New York on Tuesday.

A denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is necessary.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has criticized North Korea for a number of missile launches in the past few days.

"I strongly condemn North Korea's dangerous and destabilizing missile tests," the Norwegian said on Twitter on Tuesday.

Stoltenberg also said that North Korea would have to give up its nuclear and missile program.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called the new missile test on Tuesday "outrageous".

North Korea fires ballistic missile in response to joint South Korean-US military maneuvers

UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles of any range, which, depending on the design, can also carry a nuclear warhead.

Experts see North Korea's recent rocket tests as a reaction to the recently held naval maneuvers by South Korean and US forces.

The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan also took part in the four-day naval exercises.
