Schongau – The Obi market in western Schongau has been an integral part of the commercial area for over 30 years.

But at the end of the year, managing director Christian Weissinger will close the doors.

He describes his situation, which will result from the construction of the new Bau-V supermarket in Peiting, as not being competitive.

The plan by Kaes-Gruppe GmbH to open a branch in neighboring Peiting in addition to the already existing Bau-V-Markt in Schongau had already led to major concerns.

So not only the Schongauer city council had expressed criticism.

Reservations had also been reported from the Peißenberg municipal council.

What they all had in common was the fear that this competitive offer could have an adverse effect on the local trade structure (the Kreisbote reported).

Obi managing director Christian Weissinger now also feels downright “knocked out” due to the immense size of the XXL-V hardware store.

"We've done our best over the years," he says.

"However, we cannot compete with a DIY center that is twice or three times as large." Weissinger, who runs other Obi hardware stores in the Allgäu in addition to the Schongau branch, knows the market inside out.

There he saw the development of the V-DIY stores up close.

In general, he is not opposed to the Kaes Group, as he emphasizes.

"Their consumer market concept is justified." Nevertheless, the right measure is also important.

And he doesn't see that as a given at the Schongau location.

Three hardware stores spread over two neighboring towns, "that doesn't work."

He also had to criticize the government of Upper Bavaria, which would have approved this spatial concept.

After all, the new hardware store in Peiting will offer an impressive 28,000 square meters of space.

This results in “a market-dominating situation” for the V-market, Weissinger summarizes for himself.

The Schongauer Obi managing director is convinced that this monopoly position will now also have an impact on consumers.

"Because they only get what V-Markt offers." Competition?

"Not far and wide in sight."

An honorable departure, Christian Weissinger does not want to deny himself and his team.

"That's why we will close at the end of the year," he says, "and sell off the inventory with discounts." He rules out letting the branch run longer.

"Too lossy," was his conclusion.

In fact, Weissinger still believes in the Schongau location, the fact that his Obi branch has existed for more than 30 years alone proves him right.

That's why he doesn't want to turn his back on Lechstadt, "and if possible, he doesn't want to leave any vacant properties of this size behind." The location is simply too valuable for that.

New plans have long since matured in the mind of the Obi managing director, which, however, are not yet ready for publication.

That it would be something for the population, he could reveal that much.

“However, it is not yet certain whether I will realize it in this area,” he says.

As an option, he could also imagine a new building, of course also at the Schongau site.

"Negotiations with the landlord are already underway," reveals Weissinger in conclusion.
