Ottobeuren - Large format art prints and screenprints of some of the most famous record covers, plus portraits of musicians and bands from Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and others.

They all come from the archive of the legendary photo design agency Hipgnosis from London and can be seen in the Museum for Contemporary Art - Diether Kunerth in Ottobeuren until November 27th, 2022.

Founded in 1967 by two Pink Floyd friends, Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, they were on hand when Pink Floyd were looking for a record cover for their second album, A Saucerful Of Secrets.

Storm Thorgerson spontaneously said: "We'll do it!".

This was the birth of Hipgnosis.

Over the next few years, Hipgnosis presented groundbreaking innovations in the design of record sleeves and, thanks to their creativity, were probably the most famous album cover design studio in the world.

They achieved international fame with the cover design for "The Dark Side of the Moon", which was nominated for a Grammy.

The picture can be seen in the exhibition in a size of 150 x 150 centimetres.

That they were influenced by early 20th-century Dadaism and the surrealism of Rene Magritte,

can be seen on many covers.

The picture on the back of the Pink Floyd cover of "Wish You Were Here" is a homage to Rene Magritte.

The faceless bowler hat record boss filmed in the Yuma desert not far from LA.

The front of the album shows the two businessmen shaking hands and one of the two gets more than burned fingers.

In addition to other Pink Floyd record covers, there are those by 10cc, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, AC/DC, The Scorpions and many more.

It is noteworthy that in the 1970s there was no Photoshop or similar image editing programs.

All scenes with people had to be real, like the burning man, the drowning man in a phone booth or the swimmer in the sandy desert.

For the right scene, no distance was too far for them.

For 10cc's Look Hear? album, Aubrey Powell flew to Hawaii to photograph the sheep on the beach sofa.

Because the sheep didn't want to lie still, it was given Valium and was guarded by two dogs.

This story and many others can be read

in the accompanying texts by Aubrey Powell in the

museum .
