Andreas Scharli, energy manager at the Bürgerstiftung Energiewende Oberland, takes a stand for wind turbines and PV systems.

He also has a few tips for saving energy.

Wolfratshausen – Andreas Scharli is a man of conviction.

The gas and water fitter, today an energy manager in the ranks of the Bürgerstiftung Energiewende Oberland, gave a lecture on sustainable energy supply at the invitation of the business association Wirtschaftsraum Wolfratshausen, UWW for short.

Scharli pulled a lot of useful tips out of the quiver - and cleared up any misunderstandings.

Energy transition: Wind turbines in good shape or bad?

For community foundation "no more question"

The aim of the community foundation, which includes the districts of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Weilheim-Schongau, Miesbach and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, is to be “independent of fossil fuels” by 2035.

"Not energy self-sufficient," emphasized Scharli, "and also not climate-neutral." Currently, according to the energy manager, 86 percent of heat in the Oberland is generated with fossil fuels - only around two percent with solar thermal energy.

In addition, there is around ten percent biomass and around two percent surface geothermal energy, which is used for heat generation.

And no matter how great the efforts are to quantitatively increase the heat output: there is no way around savings, “because the demand cannot be met otherwise”.

When an entrepreneur buys a new, energy-saving heating system that has been in operation for 20 or 25 years, what it cost in the beginning is beepy.

Investments that reduce a company's energy consumption "of course cost money," admitted Scharli.

However, he pointed out that the currently horrendous costs for oil, petrol, gas and electricity "will probably no longer level off at the old price level".

For this reason, "the fixation on the return on investment", that is, the fixation on the most recent point at which the success of the capital employed can be measured, is wrong.

The same applies to the amortization calculation.

It makes more sense to do "life cycle calculations".

For example, if the entrepreneur buys a new, energy-saving heating system "that has been in operation for 20, 25 years", it is "beep what it cost at the beginning", said Scharli.

Energy wastage in companies: "Examples that hurt"

The expert knows many negative examples, i.e. companies in which the energy is literally thrown out the window.

"Examples that hurt." Scharli gave an example of a company, whose name he did not name, that requires water several hundred degrees hot for the production process.

Then “they wait until the water in large containers in the yard has cooled down to below 80 degrees – and then direct it into the sewer.” On the one hand, this has to be the case, because hot water over 80 degrees kills the bacteria in the sewage treatment plant would.

On the other hand, the boiling hot waste water could certainly be used instead of leaving it to cool down in tanks.

Energiewende Oberland: Discussion about wind power superfluous

Scharli and UWW chairman Christian von Stülpnagel, who is one of the founders of the Oberland energy transition, agreed.

"We have to rethink," said von Stülpnagel - and Scharli issued a ban on thinking.

The discussion "wind power - schee or schiach?" is as superfluous for him as a goiter.

Even the argument that open-space photovoltaic systems spoil the landscape "is no longer an argument".

According to Scharli, both technologies are indispensable, "because we have to generate additional electricity", it is about "supply security" for industry and the public.

The expansion of hydropower must also be promoted, specifically using the Loisach-Isar Canal.

But for the water management office, "the Loisach is sacred," Scharli pushed the buck to Weilheim - "that's why we're not getting any further."

Saving energy: With an outside temperature of 18 degrees, “there is no need for heating”

Basically, the expert recommended checking: "What does my boiler do all day?" The factory settings should be treated with caution, "the heating engineer is not responsible for saving energy".

It is advisable to “take a look at the manual, at the operating instructions”.

Many boilers would already start at relatively moderate outside temperatures: "But with an outside temperature of 18 degrees, no heating is needed."
