India's space agency loses contact with Mars-orbiting spacecraft after 8 years
By CNN's Swati Gupta in New Delhi
India's space agency announced Monday that the ground station lost communication with its Mars Orbiter spacecraft after a long eclipse in April 2022.
During eclipses, the spacecraft's solar cells do not receive sunlight.
A prolonged eclipse can drain the ship's power.
The mission, which was designed to span six months, stretched to almost eight years as it orbited the planet.
In a statement, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said: “The propellant must have been depleted and thus the desired attitude to generate sustained power could not be achieved.
The spacecraft has been declared non-recoverable and has reached the end of its useful life.”
The Mars Orbiter Mission was India's first interplanetary program launched in 2013 and was inserted into the orbit of Mars in 2014.
"Equipped with a suit of five science payloads on board, over these eight years, the mission has provided significant scientific understanding of Martian surface features, morphology, as well as the Martian atmosphere and exosphere," the statement said.
ISRO is continuing with multiple missions, including a planned manned flight to the moon.
