Local authorities in the Thai capital, Bangkok, declared today a state of alert, after floods caused by heavy rains swept the capital and other parts of the central region of the country.
And the Associated Press quoted local officials as saying: Several measures have been taken to tackle the floods, including placing sandbags along the banks of rivers, preparing water pumps in drainage tunnels, and deploying military trucks and putting them on standby, to transport affected people.
Bangkok has been witnessing floods since last Monday due to heavy rain, as 16 centimeters of precipitation was recorded over 24 hours, and the worsening conditions were exacerbated by the flow of large quantities of water into rivers, in addition to the flooding of dams.
In turn, Bangkok Deputy Governor Taweda Kamulvej warned that if rainfall levels are high in the coming days, many areas will be at risk, because it will take hours for water to drain into the Chao Phraya River that runs through the city.
Large parts of Thailand were flooded by monsoon rains when Tropical Storm Noro swept the country, after it swept the Philippines and Vietnam earlier during the last week of last September.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said that more than 41,000 families and 22 counties were still affected by the floods.
