The high energy prices pose new problems for hoteliers and restaurateurs.

The first hotels are planning a seasonal closure, and Dehoga is demanding more help from the state.

Wiesbaden/Munich - Rising energy costs and inflation affect everyone.

In September, the inflation rate reached the ten percent mark for the first time.

To save energy, for example, the escalators in some department stores are standing still.

The hospitality industry is also increasingly worried about the rising costs of electricity and gas.

The first hotels are planning a seasonal closure to save on heating costs.

After the coronavirus pandemic and staff shortages, the industry is still in crisis mode.

The energy crisis hits the hospitality industry harder than the corona pandemic

The energy crisis is hitting the hospitality industry and could have dramatic consequences for an entire industry.

Julius Wagner, General Manager of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) in Hesse, described the energy crisis as a "total catastrophe".

It could be life-threatening, as Wagner explained in an interview with the German Press Agency (dpa).

“In contrast, the Corona crisis was a walk in the park,” says Wagner.

About every sixth company is facing a cost explosion and has received a new electricity bill.

The companies are confronted with a quadrupling to a tenfold increase - the situation is no better for gas either.

In some companies, electricity costs are said to have risen from around 500 euros to 3,000 euros.

The additional expenses could not be offset by passing them on to customers, as Wagner explained.

Due to energy crisis: First hotel closes from December to spring

“Temporary closure can definitely be the method of choice, especially in regions that are seasonal.

That can save one or the other over the winter," said Patrick Rothkopf, Dehoga President from NRW, the WDR.

The Duisburg hotelier Oliver Bay has decided to close his hotel from December until spring.

Dehoga is demanding “speed and concrete action” from politicians with regard to the planned subsidies for energy costs for companies.

"There is nothing reliable at the moment," Wagner told dpa.

In the open letter "Energy crisis: rescue package now", Dehoga-NRW addressed Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst as well as Economics Minister Neubaur and Finance Minister Optendrenk.

In it, the association calls for quick help for the industry.

The Corona situation also continues to cause uncertainty among innkeepers and hoteliers.

Open corona rules and a lack of staff in the catering industry are putting an additional strain on the industry.
