2022-10-05T17:14:25.557Z

The party is dissatisfied, the opposition is flying high and there are disruptors in the hall: not the best conditions for a keynote speech. Liz Truss tried anyway. Also with a sense of humor reminiscent of its predecessor.

"Getting Britain Moving" was the motto of the British Conservative Party conference.

However, Liz Truss' task was initially to unite the party after her classic false start as prime minister.

And she tries to do that in her keynote speech with pleasing slogans.

Liz Truss, British Prime Minister

»I have three priorities for our economy.

Growth, growth and growth.

Growth means more money in people's pockets.

It means that companies create new jobs.

Growth means that people feel secure and can plan for their future.«

Truss originally wanted to achieve this growth with debt-financed tax cuts that would have primarily benefited higher earners.

But the British pound plummeted and her plan caused great dissatisfaction among the party base.

After heavy criticism, she had to make a U-turn.

There was some hilarity when Truss's speech was interrupted by two Greenpeace activists.

They held a placard that said, 'Who voted for this?

«.

The prime minister joked that the protests came a little too soon and that she would return to opponents of the pro-growth policy later.

Otherwise, Truss tried to be a strong leader and self-assured.

She called for consistent support for Ukraine in the war against Russia.

Liz Truss, British Prime Minister

» This is why we will increase defense spending to 3% of GDP by the end of the decade.

This will ensure the armed forces are ready to combat new and emerging threats.

We work with our friends and allies to support Ukraine in the face of Putin's brutal war.

The brave Ukrainian people.

The brave Ukrainian people are fighting not only for their own safety, but for the safety of all of us.

This is a fight for freedom and democracy around the world.«

Truss's appeal to his own party seemed almost like a plea:

Liz Truss, British Prime Minister

“We must stay the course.

We are the only party that has a clear plan to move Britain forward.

We are the only party that has the determination to achieve something.

Together we can unleash the full potential of our great country.

In this way we will build a new Britain for a new era.”

Now it remains to be seen whether Truss's speech can calm the seething party.

There is even talk of a vote of no confidence if her words don't have the desired effect.
