The last package, the last letter: On Saturday, postman Hans Zwick was given an unusual farewell to retirement in his district in Peiting.

Many customers were waiting for him on the street for a last hug.

Peiting - It's a bit like a small parade on Saturday in Peiting.

In every street where messenger Hans Zwick sees the yellow Postbus, local residents rush outside or wait at the side of the road to hug it tight again or hand a small gift.

“Best retired postman” is emblazoned in large letters on the mailman's chest – a customer had the shirt printed especially for Zwick.

Of course, he was happy to put on the shirt on his last trip after 48 years of service.

So much fuss about himself: he still doesn't feel good about it, you can tell it clearly.

But what do you want to do if you are known in many parts of Peiting like a sore thumb and are also extremely popular because of your pronounced willingness to help and friendliness.

The outgoing postman has brought letters and packages to many families over the years

Zwick has accompanied many families in Peiting over the years.

He certainly knows many family stories inside out.

He never talked about it.

And he never complained when his tours got longer and heavier in the truest sense of the word over the years.

What he didn't drag into people's houses or garages.

Guitars, firewood, XXL bags of dog food, car tires.

The craziest thing?

"It was a water barrel for the garden," Zwick recalls.

We ask whether that was bigger than himself.

"Don't underestimate my size," explains the humorous Osterzeller with a laugh, with an Allgäu accent.

“Best retired postman”: That is indeed the case from now on.

It is rumored that Zwick must have squandered part of his salary in various shops where you can buy small bags of gummy bears, the small chewy candies that are actually only available at the carnival parade - not a child on his tour in Peiting is forgotten.

Of course, no Zamperl either, there are treats especially for them.

That's over now.

"We'll never get one like that again"

"It's such a shame that we don't see each other anymore.

Friendships really developed there.” Hans Zwick is visibly touched.

What has he enjoyed the most over the years?

"Well, my customers!" The banter with the people outside, the waving, the laughing: he will miss all that badly.

"But at some point the day will come."

He waves from the rolled down window.

"Pfiad Eich, bye," he calls, and his voice breaks away.

And he's gone, Zwick Hans.

In any case, it's not just his gummy bears and dog treats that will be missing.

One or the other resident also has to shed a tear as the postbus rushes away.

"We'll never get one like that again," says one woman, not just referring to any postman.

Yes: There is only one Hans like that, of course.
