A failed ballistic missile launch by the South Korean military led to a major fire and panic in the city of Gangneung on the country's east coast.
"Many panicked residents called the city council, at first we didn't know what was going on because we didn't get any warning from the army about training of this kind," a Gangneung municipal official told AFP.
Yesterday evening, the South Korean army launched a short-range ballistic missile (Hinmo 2), which malfunctioned and crashed shortly after its launch, and a military official said: "The missile's propellant ignited, but its warhead did not explode."
South Korea's Army Staff announced that there were no reports of casualties and that they were investigating the cause of the missile launch failure.
The missile launch came as part of joint provocative maneuvers between South Korea and the United States, which included dropping bombs and launching missiles, in response to the launch of a medium-range ballistic missile launched by the DPRK, which flew over Japan yesterday, according to Tokyo, Seoul and Washington.
