Lack of energy is fueling soaring prices.
Only an increase in electricity production and an increase in gas imports could sustainably calm the markets.
In the meantime, Europeans are debating levers to ease the burden on households and businesses.
But if end consumers benefit from discounts compared to exorbitant market prices, it is because someone else - public authorities, energy companies - pays part of the bill for them.
Extend the Iberian solution
Since June, Spaniards and Portuguese have benefited from an electricity market price well below that prevailing in the rest of Europe.
Power plants there benefit from a subsidized and therefore artificially low gas price.
This allows them to lower their costs and sell electricity cheaper.
This system will cost 8.4 billion euros to the Spanish and Portuguese States.
