Reuters quoted the Malian army as saying in a statement to the Malian armed forces: The Sukhoi Su-25 fighter plane was returning from a mission to support civilians in the region.
The statement stated that the pilot and an Air Force soldier on the ground were killed in the accident, and two civilians and eight soldiers were injured, two of whom are in a serious condition.
The statement indicated that the investigation is underway into the accident, although there is no indication at this stage that it was the result of a hostile act, while clarifying that the airport was closed for a short period in the wake of the accident, but it is now operating at full capacity.
