The British Prime Minister wants to counter the European Court of Human Rights.
During her speech at the Conservative party conference, Liz Truss announced that she was going to give new powers to the government so that it could overturn decisions made by the European Court.
Interior Minister Suella Braverman will be responsible for overseeing the passing of the legislation.
“Our brilliant new Home Secretary will introduce legislation to ensure that no European judge can overrule our decisions
,” she said on Wednesday.
A “British Bill of Rights”
The head of government wants to put in place a “British Bill of Rights”.
Liz Truss told MPs that she was
“ready”
to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights if reforms aimed at reducing the influence of judges in Strasbourg did not succeed.
Britain is, however, a founding member of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The institutions have no connection with the European Union, which explains why Great Britain remains a member.
