The Ukrainian army has made significant inroads in recent weeks in the northern southern region of Kherson and recaptured almost all of the Kharkiv region (north-east) from the Russians, paving the way for the continuation of the counter-offensive towards that of Lugansk, a stronghold of separatists installed by Moscow since 2014. According to Ukrainian estimates, Russian forces controlled 98% of the province of Lugansk in September.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that "
dozens of localities
" had been "
liberated this week alone
" in the four regions annexed by Russia (Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia).
His Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin signed the legislation on Wednesday acknowledging this annexation, formally decided on Friday.
