The political-security cabinet will meet tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon to discuss the draft agreement on the maritime border with Lebanon.

A Western diplomat involved in the negotiations between Israel and Lebanon on the maritime border told Walla that "the Lebanese comments on the draft agreement are constructive and do not include 'poison pills' that could prevent a deal."

why is it important

  • The Lebanese media reported yesterday (Tuesday) that Lebanon opposes a series of clauses in the draft agreement that give achievements to Israel.

  • According to published reports, Lebanon opposes the clause in the agreement that gives Israel a veto on the start of gas exploration in the disputed area and opposes the recognition of the "Line of Line" as an international border.

  • The Western diplomat claimed that these reports are not true.

In the news center

  • Yesterday, Lebanon forwarded its response to the draft agreement to the United States ambassador in Beirut, Dorothy Shea.

The Deputy Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Elias Bou Sab, who is responsible for the contacts with the United States on the subject, stated that Lebanon will make a final decision regarding the agreement only after receiving an American response to its comments on the draft agreement.

  • The Lebanese newspaper "Jumhoriya" reported this morning that the Lebanese comments do not concern the main points of the agreement, but are more general and mainly emphasize that the agreement is not normalization with Israel, that there was no economic partnership between Lebanon and Israel and that Israel is still considered an enemy state.

  • According to the report, the Lebanese comments also included a reference to the possibility that the new government that will be established in Israel after the elections will renege on the agreement.

The Lebanese made it clear that they demand that the agreement be deposited in the UN so that it is also binding on the next government in Israel.

  • The newspaper Al-Akhbar, which is affiliated with Hezbollah, also reported this morning that as part of the Lebanese comments, it was emphasized that Lebanon does not see the agreement as recognition of the Israeli "dash line" as an international border.

what are they saying

  • A senior Lebanese source told "Al-Akhbar" this morning that if the Lapid government refuses the Lebanese comments and does not sign the agreement, then it will be "a message from Israel that it is opening the door to an escalation that cannot be contained and that will lead to a military explosion on both sides of the border."

  • A senior political official said yesterday in response to reports in Lebanon that Prime Minister Lapid will not give up Israel's security and economic interests.
