The Corona period is leaving clear traces: According to the DAK, depression among children and young people in Schleswig-Holstein has increased significantly.

The past two years have been a health challenge for everyone – physically and mentally.

Since 2020, children and adolescents have been particularly badly affected by anxiety disorders and depression, but also by morbid obesity.

This is also shown by a new report by the DAK health insurance company for Schleswig-Holstein.

Corona has left its mark on the population, that cannot be denied.

The child and youth report by the health insurance company DAK, which looks at the mental and physical health of children and adolescents in Schleswig-Holstein, shows how badly young people in Germany are affected by the consequences.

Young girls between the ages of 15 and 17 in particular have been shown to suffer more frequently from depression, anxiety disorders or obesity since the outbreak of the corona pandemic.

The report is based on accounting data from around 42,000 young people from Schleswig-Holstein, which are available to the DAK.

The age limit was 17 years.

The DAK is the third largest health insurance company in Germany with 5.5 million insured persons.

According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, a closer look at the results of the report shows the following development:

  • Compared to 2019, around 59 percent more young people between the ages of 15 and 17 with anxiety disorders and 25 percent more with depressive phases received medical treatment in 2021.

  • Girls are affected more often than boys.

In the case of treated anxiety disorders, an increase of 69 percent was recorded in girls, and in the case of treated depression, an increase of 38 percent.

  • There has been a 35 percent increase in obesity cases among five to nine year olds.

Again, girls were affected more often than boys.

Based on these figures, DAK country chief Cord-Eric Lubinski hopes that families with these problems will not be left alone, but that politicians will offer appropriate offers of help.

However, the report also revealed something positive: Compared to 2019, there were 20 percent fewer hospitalizations for children and adolescents in 2021.

Doctors also gave 42 percent fewer antibiotics to minors.

In the case of reserve antibiotics, even 48 percent fewer were prescribed.
