The smartphone app Verimi makes it possible to save the driving license on the smartphone.
But that's not enough for a police check.
It's a problem that many people are familiar with: space in your wallet is limited, but in addition to your ID card and numerous cards, you also need your driver's license.
Sometimes it gets tight.
The option to pay with your cell phone, for example, can help.
But if you want to withdraw money, you still have to use a debit or credit card.
So why not leave your driving license at home and save it on your smartphone instead?

Sounds forbidden, but it is actually possible.
In addition to the digital driver's license, the ID card can also be stored digitally, for example.
This is made possible with the help of the Verimi app, in which, in addition to ID documents, vaccination certificates can also be stored and now also a digital version of the driving license, as the consumer

reports.

The app enables users to log in conveniently and securely to Verimi partners, identify themselves there digitally and sign contracts digitally.
Digital payment is also possible via the smartphone application.
However, the Verimi app has not yet been accepted by the authorities.

In plain language, this means that the driver's license can be legally saved on the smartphone, but must still be carried in the wallet.
In the case of a police check, it still has to be presented as a card, otherwise there is a risk of a fine.

However, the idea of a digital driving license is not entirely new.
A corresponding project by former Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (48, CSU) failed with a bang in 2021.
The “ID Wallet” pilot project was in high demand from users right from the start.

But that turned out to be a problem and was ultimately one of the nails in the coffin for the driver's license on the cell phone.
Because the app was not able to process the large number of requests, which caused a lot of frustration for most users.
In addition, there were further problems and criticism from security experts from the Chaos Computer Club, so that the App ID Wallet was discontinued in October 2021.
Since then, the project has been quiet.
