: Würzburg/Munich – Bavaria's former state parliament president Barbara Stamm (CSU) is dead. She died on Wednesday (October 5) at the age of 77 in her hometown of Würzburg, like the Bavarian state parliament, citing the Stamms family announced.

She died after a long illness.

Prime Minister and party friend Markus Söder paid tribute to Stamm as "Mother of Bavaria".

With helpfulness and warmth, she was a "great role model", also for him personally.

"She will be greatly missed by all of us," he added.

Söder ordered mourning flags to be displayed on all office buildings in Bavaria.

“Barbara Stamm was the mother of the nation for Bavaria.

It hurts a lot to lose her," said Deputy Prime Minister Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters).

Barbara Stamm is dead: 42 years in the Bavarian state parliament

The former Bavarian Prime Minister and CSU leader Horst Seehofer praised Stamm as a "great politician".

"I have not met many of such a format in all the decades," Seehofer told the dpa.

"For me, she was always an important and indispensable companion in coalition negotiations and other top-level talks in Bonn and Berlin," said Seehofer.

“When she spoke there, everyone listened.

Her voice carried weight, she was respected and respected across party lines.

She was unsurpassed, especially when it came to social policy.”

Seehofer paid particular tribute to Stamm's work across party lines.

"Barbara Stamm was committed from the bottom of her heart, not out of political calculation," he said, emphasizing: "She leaves a big gap in Bavaria and in the CSU that will be difficult to close."

Stamm headed the Bavarian state parliament from 2008 to 2018.

She was the first woman to hold this office.

She was a member of the state parliament for a total of 42 years and was also a member of the state government for more than 13 years, including as state secretary and minister and from 1998 to 2001 as deputy prime minister.

In 2009 she made her breast cancer diagnosis public.

Mourning for Barbara Stamm: "I am deeply affected"

"I am deeply affected by the news of the death of my predecessor," said the incumbent President of the State Parliament Ilse Aigner (CSU).

"With Barbara Stamm, we are losing a politician who is popular and highly valued across all party lines, who for decades worked primarily for the poorer and weaker in our society and gave them a voice." (
