The 2022 World Cup in the desert is heating up.

In Munich, public viewing is largely flat.

Several factors play a role here.

Munich – Cheering over victories or mourning defeats together in front of the big screen: at least since the 2006 World Cup, public viewing has been part of football like goals, corner kicks or throw-ins.

When the 2022 World Cup begins in Qatar in November, fans in Munich will probably have to watch the games mainly in their living room at home.

Many public viewings are cancelled.

In France, more and more cities are boycotting the broadcasts because of human rights violations in Qatar.

The organizers in Munich also see them critically.

The fact that many public viewings have been canceled often has other reasons.

Neither at the airport nor in the Olympic Stadium

No screens will be set up this year either in the Olympic Stadium or in the MAC Forum at Munich Airport.

"The question of the venue does not arise for us," says Edgar Engert, spokesman for the airport.

Rather, the MAC Forum is occupied with the traditional winter market during the World Cup.

In the Olympic Stadium, the broadcasts fail due to the season.

"In the winter outdoors, that makes no sense," says spokesman Tobias Kohler.

In addition, interest in the large public viewings has been declining for years.

The situation is similar in the capital Berlin:

Munich and the 2022 World Cup: public viewing is also problematic due to the energy crisis

Backstage boss Hans-Georg Stocker has not yet made a final decision against public viewing as to whether the games will be broadcast in his club.

With a boycott you have to be careful not to be hypocritical, he says.

"Then you would also have to boycott Bayern games that feature the Qatar Airways logo." However, the public viewing would have to take place in the backstage hall, which would require a lot of heating.

Stocker asks himself: "Does it make sense to heat up for games in Qatar - and that with gas that we get from Qatar?" One thing is clear: if the games are broadcast, the situation in the country would not go uncommented.

According to landlord Christian Vogler, the Augustiner Keller has no capacity because of the many Christmas parties.

In the Hirschgarten, there is also a tendency towards cancellation due to the time of year.

The games of the 2022 World Cup, on the other hand, will be broadcast in the "Stadion" football bar on Schleißheimer Straße.
