Singing – Lieselotte Becker-Rank loved that even as a small child.

She didn't even go to school when the passion of the Saxon estate manager's daughter was already noticeable.

Germering - In a boarding school for older daughters, she later received singing and piano lessons, completed numerous performances and was particularly praised for her talent in her high school diploma.

"With her natural talent for music and mime and her bright, clear soprano voice, she brought great joy to people," the teachers wrote.

Lilo Becker-Rank's family recently quoted this sentence in their obituary.

The longtime head of the Germering music school died at the age of 91.

At first it didn't look as if Lilo Rank, who was born in Bautzen and grew up in Donauwörth and Augsburg, would be able to make music her profession.

After school she became a secretary at MAN in Augsburg.

Here, too, one was quickly taken with her, because with her nimble piano fingers she typed twice as many keystrokes per minute into the typewriter as was required.

A mechanical engineer named Günter Becker was particularly enthusiastic about the young office worker.

In 1954 the two married.

Daughter Monika was born in 1955, followed three years later by son Alexander.

But a life only as a housewife and mother?

That was nothing for the passionate singer.

She studied singing and piano at the Munich Conservatory, then acquired a pedagogical qualification and in 1968 took over the management of the newly founded music school in Germering, where the family now lived.

She looked for and found teachers, organized classrooms, coordinated the timetable and established a professional administration.

"It is also Lilo's merit that the originally two music schools in Unterpfaffenhofen and Germering have now become a successful institution in the city and in the district," said Mayor Andreas Haas in his funeral speech.

A deep turning point for the family followed in 1970. Günter Becker died in a traffic accident.

Not yet 40 years old, Lilo Becker-Rank was a widow.

In addition to working as a headmistress and singing teacher, she began to appear increasingly as a soloist in opera and operetta concerts, often together with singing partner Werner Sebb.

She turned a small local singing group into the Roßstallchor, which enjoyed great success at concerts from 1981 onwards.

Later she joined the church choir of St. Martin.

Privately, Lilo Becker-Rank liked to travel far and wide.

She went on safari in Africa, visited New Zealand and flew to the USA for the first time in 1971 to meet a pen pal in person.

Their parents had provided the Rank family with care packages in the post-war period.

There were many long friendships in the life of the passionate doll collector.

Until the very end, she maintained contact with former students and friends from her happy boarding school days.

Lilo Becker-Rank never found out that in a few months she would have become a great-grandmother for the fourth and fifth time.
