The DPRK condemned the United States' once again use of the UN Security Council as a tool to pressure it, stressing that the launch of two ballistic missiles is an appropriate response to the joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States.

The DPRK Foreign Ministry said in a statement today: “The DPRK strongly condemns the United States and some of its followers for unjustifiably using the United Nations Security Council against the DPRK for taking appropriate measures in response to the joint exercises between South Korea and the United States, which resulted in to the escalation of military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.”

The State Department added, "It is the United States that poses a serious threat to the stability of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding areas, by re-introducing attack aircraft carrier groups into the waters of the Korean Peninsula."

Yesterday, the UN Security Council held a closed-door meeting at the invitation of Washington, to discuss the DPRK's launch of two new missiles.

But China blamed the United States for what happened and said: "Washington is playing a game of double standards, participating in political maneuvers that poison the security environment in the region, and contribute to the escalation of tension."

China's assistant representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang called on Washington to be honest, address Pyongyang's rational concerns, and limit the many joint military exercises it has conducted and other countries in the region.

Shuang noted that China and Russia proposed a resolution at the end of 2019 to ease sanctions against the DPRK, noting that there is still a text on the table, which would create a favorable atmosphere towards resuming dialogue.

Last May, China and Russia vetoed a US draft resolution submitted to the Security Council to impose new sanctions on the DPRK.
