Tagesschau statement on Russia causes criticism: Twitter community judges quickly – “scandalous”

In the Tagesschau on Wednesday evening, Susanne Daubner spoke of the fact that the areas annexed by Russia were now under the "protection of the nuclear power".

The network reacted indignantly.

Hamburg – Tagesschau spokeswoman Susanne Daubner caused a stir with an unfortunate wording in the news broadcast.

In the 8 p.m. edition on Wednesday (October 5), the program reported on the illegal annexation of the Cherson, Luhansk, Donetsk and Zaporizhia Oblasts.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously signed a corresponding law to integrate the areas into Russian national territory.

So Daubner said on Wednesday evening on the subject: "This means that the regions of Cherson, Zaporizhia, Luhansk and Donetsk, some of which are occupied by Russia, will in future be under the protection of the nuclear power." The outrage quickly grew.

On the social media Twitter, numerous users accused her of using the sentence to spread Kremlin propaganda.

For example, one user wrote: "Such a formulation is scandalous." And followed up with the question: "How can something like this happen?" One of the answers under his tweet: "Kidnapped people are now under the protection of the kidnappers.

(...) If Russia invades Germany here, we will also be under the protection of the nuclear power, right?”

Another user expressed his horror as follows: "Do you have one on the waffle, Tagesschau?

Who wrote down the sentence for Susanne Daubner today that after the annexations of the regions (...) they would be under the "protection of the nuclear power Russia"?"

At the end of September, mock votes on joining Russia were held in the four regions.

The Russian occupiers then spoke about an allegedly overwhelming approval of the population.

The sham referendums on the accession of the Cherson, Zaporizhia, Luhansk and Donetsk regions are not recognized internationally.

The reason for this is that the referendums were held in violation of Ukrainian and international laws and without minimum democratic standards.
