A former police officer killed 34 people, including 22 children, today (Thursday) in a mass shooting spree at a children's daycare center in northeastern Thailand.
The gunman shot himself and died, according to local media.
The rate of gun ownership in Thailand is relatively high compared to other countries in the region, but according to official data there is not a large amount of illegal weapons in the country.
The illegal weapons that do enter the country manage to pass through the borders which are not well protected against smuggling.
