Ukraine War: New mass grave found in liberated city

+++ 10:10 p.m .:

According to Ukrainian media, graves of more than 50 civilians have been found in the city of Lyman, which was recently liberated from Russian occupation.

"The Russians dug trenches and forced people they suspected of collaborating with the Ukrainian military to collect the bodies of the dead for reburial," Ukrainian Internet TV channel Hromadske said.

Some of the graves only have numbers instead of names.

Lyman was taken by troops loyal to Moscow in May and was recaptured by the Ukrainians in early October after heavy fighting.

After the Russian troops withdrew, mass graves were found in several parts of Ukraine.

The bodies found in the Kiev suburb of Bucha caused international horror.

Hundreds of dead civilians were found there, some of whom showed signs of torture and died with their hands tied.

Since then, Bucha has been considered a symbol for the most serious war crimes.

It can also be assumed that the situation in the four regions will "stabilize", Vladimir Putin said at a video conference with Russian teachers.

According to Putin, the ruler of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has meanwhile been promoted to colonel general.

Chechen units are fighting in Ukraine alongside Russian forces, including Kadyrov's notorious personal militia.

News about the Ukraine war: Criticism in Russia – the military should stop “lying”.

+++ 17:26:

In Russia, criticism of the course of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine continues to form.

A senior Russian parliamentarian has urged the army to stop "lying" about the military operation.

"The people know it.

Our people are not stupid,” said the Chairman of the Duma Defense Committee Andrei Kartapolov in the online service Telegram.

"And it sees that we are not prepared to tell it even part of the truth." This could lead to a loss of credibility.

“The enemy is on our land.

All border villages in the Belgorod region are practically destroyed,” the former military commander said on the Telegram channel of Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov.

“We hear this from everyone, from governors, from war correspondents.

But the Department of Defense reports remain unchanged,” he lamented.

Kartapolov is not normally seen as critical of the state leadership and Putin.

News about the Ukraine war: Ovsjannikova escapes from arrest

+++ 17.04:

The former Russian television editor Marina Owsjannikova, who became internationally known for her criticism of the Ukraine war, claims to have escaped from house arrest.

The 44-year-old wrote on Telegram: "I consider myself completely innocent and since our state refuses to abide by its own laws, since September 30, 2022 I refuse to comply with the coercive measure imposed on me in the form of house arrest and I am releasing myself from this one.”

According to earlier information, the house arrest was initially scheduled until next Sunday.

Ovsyannikova is now on a wanted list.

The detention is part of a criminal case in which she is charged with spreading alleged misinformation about the Russian armed forces.

The former journalist initially gave no information about her whereabouts.

The employee of the First Channel of Russian state television, who had previously been considered loyal to the line, held an anti-war poster into the camera in a news program in mid-March.

News about the Ukraine war: Kyiv in danger?

Warning of new offensive from Belarus

+++ 15:37:

Ukraine does not rule out a Russian offensive from Belarus, which is allied with Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin.

Some units are already on Belarusian territory and are rehabilitating disused Soviet-era airfields there, Security Service Colonel Roman Kostenko told Ukraine's state news agency

Ukrinform

.

“Newly mobilized combat troops will also be stationed there.

This poses a threat. It cannot be ruled out that they will make another push north from there,” said Kostenko.

In his opinion, Belarus will enter the war against Ukraine if Russia makes serious progress on the front.

“We take all of this into account.

We know that Belarus is an enemy and we are aware that the country can go to war.

However, we're doing everything we can to make sure it doesn't work out to his advantage," the Ukrainian stressed.

The Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko did not take part in the war against Ukraine with his own troops.

However, Russian troops were allowed to use the country as a staging area for the attack.

The capital Kyiv was attacked right at the beginning of the war of aggression.

Ukraine war news: Russia warns US against "direct involvement" in Ukraine war

+++ 2.16 p.m .:

Russia does not want to give up the areas recently liberated by Ukrainian troops and will soon bring them back under its control.

"They will always belong to Russia," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow, according to the state agency

TASS

.

He was referring to parts of areas that Russia had annexed in violation of international law, but which are under the control of Ukrainian troops.

Certain areas still have to be taken, said Peskow, with a view to the neighboring country's counter-offensive.

"We will consult with the population that wants to live with Russia."

At the same time, Peskov warned the United States against supplying Ukraine with longer-range multiple rocket launchers, which could also hit targets on the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

It would be further confirmation of "direct United States involvement in this conflict," he said.

News about the Ukraine war: EU concerned about a possible nuclear attack by Russia

Update from Wednesday, October 5, 12:50 p.m .:

The EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell is concerned about the possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia in view of Ukrainian successes on the battlefield.

The war has entered a new phase in which a nuclear power is taking steps backwards and there are threats that nuclear weapons will also be used, said the EU chief diplomat in the European Parliament.

You shouldn't close your eyes to that.

"It's certainly a worrying scenario in which we need to show our support for Ukraine doesn't waver."

Borrell emphasized that even in a cold winter, solidarity with Ukraine must remain unrestricted.

The point is that the future of Ukraine is also linked to the future of the people in the EU, said Borrell.

As a basis for a lasting peace, Borrell said that Russia must take political and moral responsibility and pay for reconstruction, and that those responsible for war crimes must be held accountable.
