The Beatles' hometown of Liverpool in the United Kingdom will host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest next May, the contest announced Friday.


Liverpool beat out its Glasgow, Scotland to become the venue for the 67th edition of the popular music competition, in which various countries in Europe and the Mediterranean region send a singer or a group of performers to stage a national song that is then is put to a vote.

Although Eurovision is usually held in a city of the previous year's winning country, Ukraine, this year's winner, will not be able to host the next edition due to the conflict with Russia.

Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 last May, amid an outpouring of goodwill toward the country because of the war.

The show's host and announcer, Graham Norton, also announced the news on Twitter, writing: "Congratulations Liverpool!!! @Eurovision @bbceurovision See you in May!"

The contest website has said that the "Grand Final" of the contest will take place at the Liverpool Arena, by the River Mersey, on Saturday 13 May, with the semi-finals taking place the week before then.

"Liverpool is the ideal venue for the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine," Eurovision's executive supervisor Martin Österdahl said in a statement.

"The city is synonymous with music and the Liverpool Arena exceeds all the necessary requirements to host a global event of this magnitude. We have been very impressed by the passion that the city has shown to host the Competition and its integrative ideas to situate last year's winners, Ukraine, center stage when thousands of fans visit next May.

The last time the UK hosted Eurovision was 25 years ago, in 1998, when the contest took place in Birmingham.
