Sexist insults in a university residence in Madrid generate rejection and the expulsion of a student

Outrage over macho shouting in student residence in Madrid 1:22

A viral video starring university students residing at the Colegio Mayor Elías Ahuja in Madrid has ignited social networks and generated a strong debate about sexist attitudes in Spain.

It is a recording made this Sunday, as confirmed by the center's management, in which the facade of the residence hall and one of its students can be seen leaning out of a window shouting: “P***s!

Come out of your burrows like rabbits.

You are nympho s***s.

I promise you that you are going to f****r all in the capea.

Come on Ahuja!”

The message, which was later joined by more students from other windows, was addressed to the students of the female university residence opposite, the Colegio Mayor Santa Mónica.

This action, which has generated surprise and indignation in equal parts, has been harshly criticized by public opinion and various political leaders.

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has requested in a brief statement to the media that there be "a unitary, broad, common response to reject these macho, inexplicable, unjustified and absolutely disgusting behaviors".

Words to which he added that this episode "does not reflect the sentiment of the majority of Spanish society."

After the stir generated by this video, the management of Elías Ahuja has rushed to publicly condemn the events.

In a statement, the center condemned the expressions, apologized to the Colegio Mayor Santa Mónica and said that it will force its residents to take courses to raise awareness of gender equality.

The deputy director of the Elías Ahuja, Álvaro Nieto, affirmed this Thursday that they have immediately expelled the protagonist who uttered the insults.

Rosa María de la Fuente, vice-rector for Students at the Complutense University of Madrid (to which Elías Ahuja is attached), also reported this Thursday that they will open an information file to “settle responsibilities and classify the facts within the framework of the disciplinary regime of the university coexistence law”.

A college is a center integrated into a university that provides residence to students and promotes cultural and scientific activities, under the regulation of the university statutes.

However, it is not the first time that a similar action has been carried out by students of the center.

According to Nieto, other years have done "the thing of raising the blinds and greeting the girls from the next-door residence hall, but without those insults, which are what make this situation serious."
