An "Evening of Football" was on the program in Frankfurt - with the tournament director of Euro 2024. The fire alarm then went off at dinner in the Ratskeller.

Frankfurt - That's what you call an extraordinary evening.

The speeches in the Paulskirche have been held.

Rapper Hassan Annouri has performed twice.

Sports department head Mike Josef (SPD) spoke: "Today we would like to say thank you to all those who support us on a voluntary basis." More than 600 days before the start of the European Football Championship, the major event has long cast its mighty shadow, reports fnp.de.

Philipp Lahm, soccer world champion in 2014, came into the cradle of democracy in his function as Euro 2024 tournament director.

At his side: the ambassador for the 2024 European Championship, Célia Sašic.

She has one thing ahead of Philipp Lahm, or rather: two things.

She was European champion twice in her professional career.

Lahm failed in the 2008 final against Spain.

Philipp Lahm in Frankfurt: tournament director for the draw of the qualifying groups for Euro 2024 in the city

"Frankfurt evening for football" was the name of the event last Friday - in which volunteers were the actual main actors.

In a panel discussion with sports journalist and moderator Anett Sattler, the football stars also talked about volunteering.

The evening was a kind of kick-off event for the draw for the qualifying groups for Euro 2024, which will take place tomorrow in the Festhalle.

The primary aim was to thank the voluntary helpers (volunteers in technical jargon) - 80 of them were there yesterday - and to point out the importance of voluntary work.

“The volunteers are extremely important.

Not only organizationally, but they give the whole thing a face.” Philipp Lahm pointed this out.

They livened things up, with the world champion admitting players didn't have much contact with the volunteers.

"That's why it was important for me as tournament director to find out how much is behind it."

EM 2024 in Frankfurt: 16,000 volunteers in action

16,000 volunteers will be involved in the European Championship.

It is not yet clear who will be able to help out at the major tournament in two years' time.

"The volunteers have to be patient a little longer," says Célia Sašic, because the registration phase doesn't start until June next year.

Many, the former professional footballer was certain, were already committed somehow - and would certainly be so after the European Championship.

Volunteering requires a strong team spirit.

After the official part of the evening, everyone involved and spectators wanted to strengthen themselves and ran across the street to the Ratskeller in the Römer.

Birthday child Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD) had invited the guests there, where, among other things, there was delicious cabbage roulade.

Frankfurt: Philipp Lahm, Celia Sasic and Alex Meier sign the city's Golden Book

But suddenly, just after 8 p.m., the fire alarm went off.

At first it didn't bother anyone.

People stood in line at the food counter or sat at the tables, ate, drank and talked.

Until someone shouted that the building had to be evacuated.

Finally, everyone ran to the square in front of the Ratskeller.

But that wasn't enough for the security guards, they sent the party across the street to Paulsplatz.

Some very clever ones had packed their plates and took them out with them.

Philipp Lahm and Célia Sašic, who, like “football god” Alex Meier, had previously signed the city's golden book, took it easy and used the unexpected break to chat with some volunteers.

The alarm went off in the background.

Nothing dramatic had happened, as the fire brigade, which arrived with two vehicles, soon reported.

The preparation of the food created vapors that triggered the fire alarms, reported head of operations Thomas Fuchs.

Meanwhile, Philipp Lahm and Célia Sašic were back in the queue for food in the Ratskeller.

They will certainly remember this fiery event for the European Football Championship forever.

The five games of the European Football Championship 2024 in Frankfurt will cost the city 30 million euros.

UEFA has also recommended accommodation north of Frankfurt for the teams that qualified for Euro 2024.
